‘Mean Green’ Juice Recipe

FullSizeRender-13

When I tell people I love drinking green juice I don’t always get the best reaction.

Most people I’ve talked to have viewed it quite negatively.

“Ewww that sounds gross”

“That sounds awful. Sorry but it does. Why are you torturing yourself”

“That looks like you’re drinking grass. Smells like grass too? Why are you drinking that? Are you a cow?”

That last comment was made by my dear old mom, who prior to getting fit and healthy herself had detested all things green and thought a well-balanced meal for a child when we were growing up was a McDonald’s kids meal. YES REALLY!

Thank goodness she’s seen the light. She only goes back to McDonald’s on the rare occasion that she’s craving a sausage and egg McMuffin. I give her dirty looks while she eats it.

Now back to the green juice…

Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead – The Documentary

This is one of my favorites. I first learned about it after watching an amazing documentary called, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. The guy in the movie, Joe Cross, was overweight and suffering from a number of ailments. He decided to go on a juice cleanse for sixty days and he only drank fresh fruit and vegetable juice. I give the guy major props because the longest I’ve lasted on a cleanse is 3 days and I was delirious at the end of it lol.

Joe’s original recipe for Mean Green Juice:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cucumbers
  • 8 celery stalks
  • 4 apples
  • 16 kale leaves with stalks
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 inch piece of ginger

Directions:

  1. Wash all produce well
  2. Peel the lemon and core the apple
  3. Add all ingredients through juicer and enjoy

 Servings: Makes 2 servings of 16-20 oz (500 – 600ml)

My weekly fruits and veggies 🙂

I modified this recipe. I didn’t add lemons because I drink lemon water each morning. I substituted pineapples for the apples because I live in the tropics and pineapples are more readily available. Also, I think 4 apples is a lot of sugar. I also added bok choy because it is very nutrient dense. I added carrots because they contain a lot of vitamin A and that’s really good for your eye health. I’ve got major vision problems *sigh…

My modified recipe for Joes Mean Green Juice :

Ingredients:

  • 4 celery stalks
  • 2 cucumbers
  • 1 pineapple
  • 10 kale leaves
  • 2 bunches of bok choy
  • 2 inch piece of ginger root
  • 6 carrots

Servings: Makes 2 servings of 16-20 oz (500 – 600ml)
